Estimation & Material Takeoff

Steel Material Takeoff Spreadsheet

Accurate Pre-Construction Estimates & Material Takeoffs

The project of constructing a building is built of many phases like designing, layout planning, and estimating. To secure a project and maintain project profitability, steel fabricators must produce accurate material takeoffs and structural estimations. Even a minor material under-count can erase bid profit margins, while over-estimates make bids non-competitive.

At Alpha Steel Services, we provide fabricators with detailed, swift estimating support. We read contract design drawings to compile a comprehensive Advanced Bill of Materials (ABM) and bid estimates. We identify every linear foot of steel member, plate weight, weld volume, and bolt quantity to provide a granular representation of project material requirements.

Bid Estimations

We produce complete bid packages including total steel tonnage, square footage of paint/primer coatings, shop welding length requirements, field bolt counts, and structural assembly complexities. This helps you calculate exact labor hours and shop routing times for accurate, competitive bidding.

Advanced Bill of Materials (ABM)

To lock in steel prices and avoid supply shortages, you need to order raw materials early. We generate ABMs within days of project kickoff, enabling you to place mill orders or check service center inventory while connection designs and detailed drawings are still under development.

Linear Nesting & Scrap Reduction

Our estimators run linear material nesting analyses using raw beam stock lengths (e.g. 40ft, 50ft, 60ft lengths). We generate layouts showing exactly how to cut members to achieve maximum yield, keeping steel scrap levels under 3%.

Deliverables List

Each material takeoff package is structured for easy integration into estimating systems (like FabSuite, Tekla PowerFab):

Excel Material Takeoff

Itemized spreadsheets categorized by steel shape (W-shapes, HSS, angles, channels) with dimensions and weights.

Bolt & Hardware Summary

Total counts of field bolts sorted by diameter, length, grade (A325, A490), and washer requirements.

Nesting Reports

Linear nesting summaries to guide stock length purchasing and cut efficiency.

3D Bid Models

Quick conceptual 3D structures in Tekla/SDS2 (on request) to visually check member configurations.
